A history teacher from Pennsylvania US was detained on 11 February 2025 after more than three years of prison in Russia. Steve Witkoff, a special envoy for President Donald Trump, traveled to Moscow, where he took custody of Fogel and left Russia with him. He brought him to the White House, where Trump greeted him.
Marc was arrested by Russian authorities at Moscow airport on 15 August 2021 for carrying 17 grams of marijuana to treat his chronic back pain, but authorities convicted him of drug smuggling.
After several months of trial, in June 2022, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison under Article 229.1 of the Russian criminal code and transferred from a detention center in Moscow to a penal colony.
