Coastal Flood Advisory Issued For Three New Jersey Counties

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a coastal flood advisory at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, which will be in effect for Thursday from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., specifically targeting Hudson, Essex, and Union counties.

According to the weather service, Vulnerable areas close to the waterfront and shoreline can expect inundation of up to nearly one foot above ground level.

There may be minor flooding in particularly susceptible locations near the waterfront, including certain roads and low-lying properties such as parking lots, parks, and lawns, as well as homes and businesses with basements.

The weather service further advises that if travel is necessary, please allow for extra time, as some roads may be closed. Avoid driving around barricades or through waters of uncertain depths, and take the appropriate actions to safeguard properties at risk of flooding. It is crucial for individuals in susceptible areas to move to higher ground without delay.

A flash flood can occur with little warning and may present a sudden and severe inundation that can develop in a matter of minutes to hours, even in regions not currently receiving rainfall. A flood warning is declared when flooding is either closed or can take place in the coming time .

Essential Tips For Navigating Challenging Weather Conditions

Following are some tips one should follow during these difficult times if needed:

1. Flood Advisory

A flood advisory is issued when flooding is not expected to reach levels serious enough to warrant an official warning. However, it can still lead to significant inconveniences and may create situations that pose a threat to life and/or property. A flood watch is implemented when conditions are conducive to flooding; this does not guarantee that flooding will occur but indicates that it is a possibility.

2. Move To Higher Ground

If you find yourself in a flood-prone area or are camping in a low-lying region, your first step should be to relocate to higher ground.

3. Follow Evacuation Orders

When local authorities issue an evacuation order, it is imperative to comply promptly.

Before departing, ensure your home is secured by locking all doors and windows and also disconnect Utilities and Appliances.

Areas Most Affected

The advisory specifically highlights areas prone to flooding, including:

  • Middlesex County: Coastal towns along Raritan Bay may see significant impacts.
  • Monmouth County: The beaches and waterfront communities are likely to experience flooding.
  • Ocean County: Low-lying areas near Barnegat Bay could be particularly susceptible.

Residents in these regions should remain vigilant and monitor local news for updates regarding the situation.
