Winter Storm Kingston Disrupts Air Travel At Charlotte Douglas International Airport

Travellers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport face the consequences of the approaching second day of wintry weather, which is expected on Thursday.

The cancellations of more than 200 flights and over 170 flight delays affected the operations of Charlotte Douglas on Wednesday.

A total of 156 flights had received cancellations, while another 24 flights faced delays according to the flight schedule at 8:15 a.m. Thursday.

WCNC Charlotte Weather Impact team follows the possibility of a wintry mix occurring across Carolinas during this week.

The flight cancellations and delays at Charlotte Douglas International Airport show poor weather conditions across the Charlotte region and in other areas. Winter weather advisories covered the Charlotte metropolitan area as well as all of North and South Carolina up until Wednesday morning. The period from early morning to noon on Wednesday brought extreme cold warnings for locations situated west in North Carolina.

Black ice conditions have developed when snow, along with rain and sleet, transformed into a state of frozen ice. The crew members and staff have worked extended shifts to guarantee the safety of community members.

Transportation officials from the Charlotte Department of Transportation applied about 20,000 gallons of brine throughout the entire city. City officials recommend avoiding all roads if it is possible to do so despite their preparation work.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein activated an emergency declaration during his Tuesday announcement about upcoming winter storms that were forecast to hit the state.

Gov. Stein identified both power grid maintenance and ice elimination as vital components of state emergency management.

Dangerous conditions will affect the area because temperature changes will lead to water on roads becoming ice. The state is organizing its resources to deal with upcoming weather effects.

Stein stated that ‘Emergency management crews together with department of transportation crews alongside the highway patrol and national guard teams prepare their efforts for winter weather by bringing the roads and establishing resource positions while removing abandoned cars off our highways.’

Flight Cancellations And Delays

As of Wednesday morning, February 19, over 200 flights were canceled at CLT due to the winter storm. This figure has since increased as airlines continue to assess the situation.

Major airlines operating out of Charlotte, including American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, are facing significant disruptions as they manage the cancellations. Passengers are advised to check their flight statuses regularly as conditions evolve.
